Joe Pires:
Joe is a businessman
who is innovative and tactical in his every day business life. As Chairman and Managing Director of many companies Joe is
multifaceted, versatile and always brainstorming new and creative business ideas. He is the Managing Director of Caribbean
Chemicals and Agencies Ltd, one of the premier regional suppliers of agricultural and industrial chemicals, as well as the
chairman of Bowen Boats Ltd., Caribbean Express Ltd and numerous other small and medium sized businesses.
Mr. Pires has served on many boards across varied industries in Trinidad and Tobago, such as 51 Degrees Ltd., one
of the most popular nightclubs and entertainment centers in the country and First Citizens Bank. He is also quite philanthropic
and socially responsible, exemplified by his active role in a new and developing political party, as well as many other charitable
activities such as an upcoming not for profit international comedy festival, “Laugh Out Loud” solely for the cause
of hurricane relief in the Caribbean.
Joe’s philosophy on the world agricultural system
is that it has become a single market and important developments are reshaping the competitive field for all players. Modern
agribusiness depends heavily on advanced technology and engineering, and on the biological and physical sciences. Through
Agri-Buzz on Gayelle The Channel, Joe has found the perfect platform to share some of the new technologies he has found that
have and can enormously increase agribusiness efficiency, quality and productivity in the Caribbean region and internationally.
In this first season of, Agri-Buzz on Gayelle The Channel Joe will delve into some of the innovative solutions that
have been developed within the region and internationally for farmers and producers charged with the responsibility of feeding
the world.
“One flaw of Trinbagonian agri-businessmen and business women...we are thinking
too small. Small island yes, but never small ambition.” –Joe Pires
Joe’s passion
is one that runs in his family. Following in his father’s footsteps, Joe is embarking upon this project to bring a fresher,
more business savvy perspective on the industry and developments in agriculture.
It is well known
that one of the biggest problems that developing countries face is how to market their hard grown agricultural products, both
inland and for export. Joe believes that the aspect of professional agricultural management and marketing should be regarded
as an important way to overcome seasonal agricultural surpluses and shortages of food supply and also as a means of generating
more income. Joe also believes that this strategy is not exclusive to mega-farmers and established producers. “There
is an inherent advantage for small and micro-farm producers; quality and exclusivity.”
Joe
has also worked on agriculture-themed television in the past (‘Survival’ with former AVM, channel 4) and also
currently hosts ‘Farming Today,’ a radio programme that has been on the air for the last 35 years, which was started
by his father, Joe Pires Senior on radio 610 AM in the early seventies. ‘Farming Today’ continues to be aired
on 103FM. Joe has taken an interest in stepping back into the television media spotlight, with an impressive arsenal of experience
and knowledge of over ten years in the agri-business.
