Golconda, Our voices Our lives.
Golconda Settlement, San Fernando is a small village just outside San Fernando, it's economic fortunes were
made on sugar, through the hard work of the original indentured labourers in early Trinidad and Tobago. Most residents of
Golconda worked at Caroni 1975 on the sugar estate. Today, UTT researcher Lawrence Scott has gone to Golconda and interviewed
25 of its residents about life in the village, the history of the sugar workers who lived and thrived, the culture of cane
in T&T's history, the unique stories of the surviving decendants of the original sugar workers, festivals of Divali and
Ramleela and what the closure of Caroni meant to the village. Scott's book called, "Golconda, Our voices Our lives.",
will be launched tonight at NALIS library. On Monday 26th, and again this morning, Gayelle highlighted an eleven minute feature,
of a visit to the village of Golconda to interview some residents, whose recolletions and stories are included in the book.
"The language of talking about the cane is at risk of disappearing. So what is being preserved is a language,
a culture as well as these residents' very personal lives." - Scott. "Golconda, Our voices, Our lives."
will be launched tonight at the NALIS library. Cock-A-Doodle-Doo! Wednesday 27th October 2009 @ 6 AM
and again at 2: 30 pm. Be sure to watch.
